Workshop on Microplastics

On the 1st of February a large group of scientists and students gathered at the Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork, to discuss research on microplastics and their (potential) impacts on the environment. The workshop, organised by Prof. Marcel Jansen, was well attended by a diverse, and very interested audience.

Experts from Galway, Edinburgh, London, Wallingford, and Ostend (Belgium) presented their research, followed by discussion. Topics included the presence, detection, and fate of microplastics in freshwater and marine environments. Also impacts of microplastics on duckweed, and trophic transfer to Gammarus (shrimp), as well as the emerging picture of impacts of nanoplastics on gut microbiomes were topics of discussion.
